Eugene Crowley, Jr., was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1944. He spent thirty-two years teaching high school English Grammar, World Literature, and Mythology in Chicago. He earned a Master's degree in General Psychology from Roosevelt University in Chicago. He is a former member of the Jungian Institute in Evanston, Illinois. He has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. In his first professional attempt in writing, he extends the focus of his Master's thesis, "Meaning in Life for Urban Adolescents", to adults by encouraging them to reach a level of maturity by living more harmoniously with themselves, their fellow man, and the universe. The author sees a need for an overhauling or a reinventing of Western culture with the application of the moral and wise traditions that had given the Native American Indians and ancient civilizations wholeness, order, and harmony. These cultures maintained a balance with themselves and nature. While many universities are eliminating their Classical Studies, the author sees a need in understanding the past civilizations' spiritual, psychological, and holistic approaches to life. These approaches gave them serenity and security in their connection with the universe. They knew their place in the "Big Picture". Minister Kevin Benton attended Jules Mastbaum High School in Philadelphia, where he lettered 3 years in varsity basketball earning the 1990 Philadelphia Public League Player of the Year, Joint Effort All-America and Sportsmanship awards as a senior. He earned a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Delaware where he attended college for (2) years. Sensing the call of God on his life, he left his scholarship situation at Delaware to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA where he majored in Psychology and played basketball for the team. Liberty is one of the world's largest Evangelical Christians Schools, founded by the late, great Rev. Dr. Jerry Falwell. Liberty's basketball team made history in 1994-1995 by being the first Christian School to ever play in the NCAA tournament against another Philadelphia native and friend, Rasheed Wallace and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Minister Benton was also blessed to meet his college sweetheart and wife, Nikki Benton, at Liberty, whom he married on September 13, 1997. Upon leaving Liberty, Minister Benton had the opportunity to play (3) years of professional basketball, one year in Europe and two years in Mainland China. He was also invited to some N.B.A. camps during his career, including the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played against multiple N.B.A. Champions, Kobe Bryant and Rick Mahorn. Other N.B.A. players included Jerome Allen of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Paul "Snoop" Graham of the Atlanta Hawks, Shawn Harvey of the Dallas Mavericks and a host of many other great professional basketball players. Douglas Fisichella began his studies of Metaphysics and world religions in his early 20's. Having been raised in a household without dogmatic assertions about religion, he was not subjected to the usual insistence on one specific faith. His father Anthony J. Fisichella was one of the country's foremost proponents of the Esoteric Sciences. He was also a student of the world's religions and a biblical scholar. This early exposure to the open study of various religious systems left its impact in a non-judgmental and assimilating attitude toward all spiritual teachings. Being what he refers to as a casual student for much of his life, these teachings lay behind the scenes as an influence, but not a focus until more recent years. The current upheaval in the world seemingly centered on religious differences awakened what had been slumbering inside of him - the real student. He is now intent on sharing his insight into the common core of the religious faiths of the world in order to take the focus off of the cultural differences in expression. In the past decade, award-winning author and photographer Carolyn CJ Jones has evolved from living on a sailboat to landlubber, married to single, drinking to sober, nurse to author/photographer/publisher and finally, from van living to homeowner. In the early 2000's, Carolyn traveled the Western States and Mexico for three years while photographing dozens of gates; she has hundreds of gate images from her journeys. Photos from her gate collection, along with accompanying prose, are published in her book Opening the Gates of the Heart: A Journey of Healing. This book is a reflection of Carolyn's own healing journey from feelings of worthlessness and deep despair to joy and peace. It offers hope and inspiration to the soul in the corner who struggles. Opening the Gates of the Heart is the winner of two recent Honorable Mention awards: one from the 2010 San Francisco Book Festival for photography/art, and one from the 2010 New York Book Festival for spirituality. Carolyn currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and is occupied with publishing her book.
